The Most Important Number in the World - 1.5 Degrees Climate Clock”
ABOUT US
Founded in 2013, Potter's Hand, a registered Trust has been touching the lives of young children by ensuring that each child receives primary education, nutrition and clothing, most of whose parents are daily wage labourers and workers in Padappai Village, 60 kms from Chennai.
This year we have planned to reach beyond Padappai and transform the life of these children with your help and support.
Our Programs
Below are some of the projects that we have been running at Manimangalam village near Kanchipuram.
Project OLI - Onsetting the Life of Irulas
The Covid-19 pandemic and recent rains not only lashed places but people's livelihoods as well. Potter's Hand NGO has been raising awareness among the people about the Irula Tribe. We have been supporting the community since 2015.
Elders, women and children suffer equally during rains. Their settlement areas are generally beside water bodies such as lakes and ponds and water overflows into the settlement. The hard ground turns into a shallow swamp thus bringing in snakes, rodents and other insects sometimes poisonous ones too.
Project Candlelight - Helping the blind see
"Anbalaiyam for the differently-abled (UNIODA)" was founded by Dr.Rajan, who himself is partially blind, houses 15 blind people in a rented house in Mudichur. It is difficult to get a house for these people as owners are reluctant to rent out their property to them. So they have to keep changing their place every now and then.
Under Project Candlelight, we plan to continue providing their essentials and also provide livelihood programs especially for the ones with education and skills.
Ration Distribition
The rainfall in November left the people of Manimangalam is dire straits. Livelihood already lost due to Covid, the heavy rains have almost put them on the streets. Roofs of their thatched roof houses (huts) gave way and water was puring over their heads and the overflowing water from the nearby lake was forming a puddle under their feet. Potter's Hand came to their rescue by providing dry ration kits, blankets and Tarpaulins.
After-School Program
Children’s knowledge need to be reinforced by parents and teachers outside the school as well. While school and teachers are excellent in teaching children, that alone is not sufficient to laying strong foundation in children, both education and social skills. Parents who are educated are able to do it themselves. But those who don’t have the time depend on Tuitions andother sources. The parents we deal with do not have the knowledge, time or money to afford tuitions. We have identified those children and have been teaching and training them since 2015.
Protection & Self-Defence
Children are the most vulnerable section of the society. Any harm done to them at a tender age leaves a life long scar and causes permanent psychological damage that could change them into a threat to the society. Over 53% children face some sort of abuse or the other, the downtrodden, especially girls, being the most vulnerable. Potters Hand conducts Karate classes for Boys and Girls with a goal to teach them self protection. While the classes help the children safeguard themselves, it also helps them discipline themselves and focus on their goals. We have noticed a remarkable difference in the children trained in this sport and those who have not. It is a holistic approach to a better life.
Legal Aid
We provide legal assistance to people who are unable to afford legal representation and access to the court system. Legal aid is central in providing access to justice ensuring equality before the law, the right to counsel and the right to a fair trial. Legal aid is essential to guaranteeing equal access to justice for all, especially for citizens who do not have sufficient financial means. We offer this assistance by collaborating with like minded NGOs.
Mainstreaming Youth through Football
This opportunity is provided to students who cannot go further level in their education independently due to lack of interest. We were brought to notice of dropout children and we decided to give them extra care in skill development. We found out that football may change their lives.
The basic goal of this football project is to support dropout children in order to break the poverty and help them to be self dependent individuals throughout their life. Also to make them stay with the community with dignity. Foot ball will make them a better person we support all children despite their religion, race, caste, ethnic background.
