Helping the Visually Challenged People in Mudichur Survive Difficult Times - 07 Dec '21
This is a series covering the everyday challenges of around 15 blind people living in a shelter home in Mudichur near Tambaram, Chennai.
About them:
"Anbalaiyam for the differently-abled (UNIODA)" was founded by Dr.Rajan, who himself is partially blind, houses 15 blind people in a rented house in Mudichur. It is difficult to get a house for these people as owners are reluctant to rent out their property to them. So they have to keep changing their place every now and then.
Livelihood:
Most people make their living by selling peanut candies, Pens, etc. on the Electric Trains. They leave in the morning and return in the night. Housing and breakfast are provided at the shelter, while they manage lunch and dinner on their own. Some of them have a good education. One person has completed his MSW while another has completed his M.A. One of them is also self-trained and is an expert percussionist. Life during the Pandemic: Though life is slowly returning to normal, they depended on some kind-hearted people who helped them during the pandemic.
Project Candlelight:
Potter's Hand NGO visited them on 30 November and on 01 December to ascertain their situation and has decided to support them by providing basic items that they don't have. Since it's winter we gave them blankets and pillows. Under Project Candlelight, we plan to continue providing their essentials and also provide livelihood programs especially for the ones with education and skills.
