Project OLI - Onsetting the Life of Irulas
Helping Irula Community in Manimangalam Survive Difficult Times 27 Nov '21
This is a series covering the everyday challenges of the Irula community in Manimangalam village. Housing Woes: The Covid-19 pandemic and recent rains not only lashed places but people's livelihoods as well. Potter's Hand NGO has been raising awareness among the people about the Irula Tribe. We have been supporting the community since 2015. Hundreds of Irulars still live in thatched-roof houses that start leaking with the smallest downpour of rain. They cover the thatched roofs with Plastic sheets or Tarpaulins that don't last long and needs frequent replacing.
Harmful environment:
Elders, women and children suffer equally during rains. Their settlement areas are generally beside water bodies such as lakes and ponds and water overflows into the settlement. The hard ground turns into a shallow swamp thus bringing in snakes, rodents and other insects sometimes poisonous ones too.
Help Needed:
These people need immediate sustainable and long term solutions. They are in need of proper housing, education and healthcare. It is time for us to intervene and help in the interest of reducing the financial inequality in the interest of nations well-being.
