There is a problem

Most children have been confined to their homes since March '20, for nearly a year and the need for children to get into physical activity. They are glued to their mobile phones, computers or Playstations. Many of them are addicted. Their eating and sleeping patterns have changed. It is putting them into a risk of obesity. Due to lack of physical activity, many children as young as 11 years have grown a paunch. If this continues, we’d be creating an unhealthy future generation that will be spending time paying hefty hospital bills.

Is there a solution?

There is an urgent need for children to indulge in physical activities. Playing an outdoor sport is a great way for children to take a break from the pandemic and release the pent-up energy. It also helps them lead fuller and happier lives as regular sports and fitness activities have proven to provide not only physical benefits but also social and psychological benefits to children.

They learn to respect rules, team, colleagues and opponents. Sport is an important learning environment for children, even winning a losing. Numerous studies have shown that children who play sports perform better at school. It is also within sport that peer status and peer acceptance is established and developed.

Similarity and Contrast

While the problem of inactivity and the urgent need to get out of their homes and start playing is similar for children across all social strata, not every child is able to do so. Not that they don't want to step out or doesn't like to play, but the lack of infrastructure specially those little ones that live in the outskirts of an urban setting. Neither do they have access nor can their parents afford "kits" to play an organized sport.

There in lies the contrast.

Community Support

Don't they deserve to play an organized sport? Yes, by all means, they do; only with your support, only with your extended arm.

The children of Padappai Village are raring to step out and play sports such as Volley Ball, Badminton, Cricket and indoor games such as Carom Board and Chess. Who knows one day they could become champs, but only if we take a step forward.

To benefit Grace, Shweta, Dilip and our other children, we are engaging in sports activities.

The children are ready. Are we ready to build a healthy next generation?
