The story of 70 year old Rajathi Ammal will move even the stone hearted. Despite having six children, today she lives a life of loneliness and her state is one of helplessness. Having already lost her husband, she is neglected by her five children because their mother chose to care for her youngest child, a mentally ill boy. Blame it on the social taboo of a household with a mentally affected child or the care not attitude of her own children? It's difficult to pin it on one reason or the other.
Until the pandemic struck in March 2020, for years Rajathi Ammal had found a way to make a living for herself and her son. Every day she would go to the local ration shop. She would ask the people standing in the queue if she could substitute them by standing in the queue and buy them the items they needed. Since it was a regular affair for them, they kindly obliged to her offer, having known about her plight. She would make a meager Rs.20 for the service that she offered through this method. This was her sole mode of making a living.
Then the pandemic stuck!
Rajathi Ammal lost her livelihood because the shops were closed and people remained indoors. With no queues and no people to substitute, Rajathi Ammal and her son were in despair. They managed to get by and survive with the help offered by some of the people living in her neighborhood. But they lived the last year not knowing what tomorrow holds for them.
"Feeding the Needy" program came as a welcome relief to Rajathi Ammal and her son. Now they have a beacon of hope that they will get at least 2 square meals every day.
Each afternoon one can spot Rajathi Ammal, carrying a bag containing utensils to take away food and also carrying a new hope about tomorrow.
The story of Rajathi Ammal is only an example of many such women who take care of their family in spite of them being advanced in age.
